Scheme to Support Medical Students in Gaza
GEM – Gaza Educate Medics
Introduction:
The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has posed significant challenges to the healthcare system, resulting in a shortage of medical professionals and limited educational opportunities for medical students. PalMed Academy, along with individual educators, endeavors to establish a dedicated program to support Palestinian medical students in Gaza. Our aim is to provide them with the necessary resources, training, evaluation, and opportunities to advance their education and contribute to the future healthcare workforce in the Gaza Strip.
The objective of this scheme is to deliver medical education through an online platform and other innovative means of content delivery, aligning with the curriculum of both medical schools in Gaza and catering to the needs of approximately 2500 students. This educational program will be accredited and supported by both Al Azhar University and the Islamic University of Gaza. Our online platform will serve as the primary mode of delivering medical education for both universities in the foreseeable future, with the endorsement of the Deans of Medicine from both institutions. We aim to collaborate closely with the universities to empower them and ensure the preservation of their institutions. Faculty members from the universities will be actively engaged, and we will also leverage the expertise of a global network of experts willing to support the process. Eventually, the management of the platform will transition back to the universities.
Objectives:
- Provide online accredited medical education and training for Palestinian students in Gaza.
- Deliver the program with the support of expert faculty and networking with university faculty.
- Align and represent the curriculum of both universities.
- Ensure the curriculum reflects international standards.
- Facilitate peer networking and simulated cases.
- Implement assessments and appraisal reports.
- Establish a mentor/mentee scheme.
- Provide pastoral support for mental health and well-being.
- Preserve the legacy of both medical schools.
- Plan for a minimum of 3-5 years to support the universities’ recovery.
- Upon completion of the program, students will receive reports, exam reports, and a certificate accredited by their university, aiding in their continued progress.
